Wordy Wednesday #15
People in Cádiz often blame students’ behaviour on the Levante, a crazy-making wind which blows all too often in this neck of the woods. As far as I’m aware, it wasn’t windy yesterday, which means that my studnets were just being plain noisy! I do think that Spanish children are generally noisier than other nations, as I’ve said before on this very blog!
How do you deal with noise?
Hi Teresa, I see lots of teachers using the technique where the teacher puts her hand in the air, then when each student sees, they stop talking and put their hand up too. It spreads like wildfire. I don’t know if you mean this, or if you want to reduce the noise during an activity.

I would actually love a device with which I could just turn down the volume on my students in general. I have a couple of students whose natural volume seems to be a shout! But I have used the technique you mention with some classes and it really does work 🙂
You’ve no idea what a comfort that is to me! I thought I was an awful teacher for not being able to get quiet in at least two of my groups. Now I know it’s not me! it’s the culture. thank you 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, Kirsten. It’s a shame, I know, but there are just some classes or students which you know are a battle to keep quiet!
